Who are us

Profile of the WFTL

A space of encounter for a theological reflection about alternatives and possibilities for the world, with the purpose of contributing to the construction of a worldwide network of contextual theologies guided by perspectives of liberation. In an ecumenical spirit, it welcomes and promotes the expression of ecological spiritualities, encouraging a deeper understanding of global socioeconomic problems in the light of the resources of theology and vice-versa. It is a space that favors the dialogue between differences of gender, religion, ethnicity, culture, generation and physical capability, fostering a theology whose discourse contributes to inform transforming practices in society, in order to promote the formation of citizens who are active in the building of a new world of solidarity.

General goals of the WFTL
  • To connect our deliberations with the values and proposals of the World Social Forum.
  • To contribute to the construction of a worldwide network of contextual theologies in a perspective of liberation.
  • To integrate spiritual experiences, liberating practices and theological discourses.
  • To include the participation of various liberation movements and organizations and their spiritualities in the WFTL.
  • To highlight the interreligious dialogue as an alternative to fundamentalism, with the purpose of abolishing poverty and working for peace.
  • To discern how to become proactive in the processes of social transformation.
  • To help create intercultural, interreligious and interethnic relations that are based on an inclusive equality in terms of gender.
Results expected for the process
  • Carrying out the four day program and developing the 3rd WFTL's general theme - Water, Earth, Theology - For Another Possible World - as well as the activities of workshops and research reports proposed by participants.
  • 400 registered participants, among which:
    1. About 50% of persons dealing directly with theology and religious studies (either in academic education, popular education, pastoral activities or social movements). The remaining 50% should be a diverse audience that identifies with the WFTL's proposal.
    2. An equitable number of theologians from each region of the world, also in terms of gender and ethnicity.
    3. Representation of partner organizations of the WFTL both in the organization and funding.
  • Qualification of the WFTL's methodology in the following directions: firstly, in the theological reflection on the general theme through conferences, plenary sessions and a panel; and secondly, in the theological discussion of various topics and developments through workshops offered by participants as well as research reports and publications.
  • New partnerships of theological organizations, groups and associations during the process of preparation and organization of the WFTL with the purpose of contributing to the formation of networks of contextual liberation theologies.
  • Drafting of papers and articles prior to the event and publication of a book containing articles and conferences after it.
